The Scouting Uniform

The Cub Scout uniform is important for many reasons, including:

  • Identification: The uniform identifies a scout as a member of the Cub Scouts. Badges on the uniform tell other members about the den, pack, and council they belong to.
  • Commitment: The uniform symbolizes the scout’s commitment to Scouting and acceptance of the BSA’s ideals.
  • Achievement: The uniform is a way for scouts to show off their accomplishments.
  • Unity: The uniform builds unity among Scouts.
  • Recruitment: The uniform is a tool for recruiting other young people into the program.
  • Sense of belonging: The uniform provides a sense of belonging.
  • Presence: The uniform also helps others notice the presence of Scouting in their community.

Cub Scouting is for boys and girls of school going age from Kindergarten to 5th grade. There are three different types of uniforms that Scouts can wear based on their den and grade level. This page will give you an overview of each type and help with the process of getting a uniform.

We frequently refer to the Class A and Class B uniforms in our calendar events, the information below will clarify what constitutes a Class A or Class B uniform. For all practical purposes, a Scout is considered to be “in uniform” when they are wearing their Class A outfit.

We recommend all Scouts to attend Den and Pack meetings in their Class A uniform. We also recommend that Scouts wear their Class A uniform for any events of a ceremonial nature (parades, color guard, etc) where they will be participating in front of members of the community.

Class B is recommended for camp-outs, and other outings as appropriate.

Lion Uniform - Class B

Scouts in Kindergarten belong to the Lion Den. The Lion den does not HAVE to wear a Class A uniform. They can wear a Class B uniform to all Den and Pack Meetings. The Class B uniform comprises of a T-shirt provided by the pack. All scouts that join our pack receive a t-shirt. If you have not yet received yours, please contact your den leader or a member of the pack committee.

Scout Shop

The easiest way to purchase a uniform is to visit the Local Scout Shop in Cleveland and have your scout try on the uniform there to ensure that you are getting something that fits now and grows with your scout since you would be trying to use the same uniform for a few years at a time.

If you are short on time; you can also call them and they are able to assemble a whole uniform to have it delivered to your doorstep. You can contact them using the information listed.

Financial help

While a Cub Scout uniform is a requirement for most activities; it should not be construed as a barrier to Scouting, especially for those who might not have the means to spend a up to a hundred dollars on clothing and insignia. If you believe you are not in a position to purchase a uniform for your scout, please reach out to a member of the Pack committee.
